Centennial of Poet Sultan bin Ali Al Owais

7X, in collaboration with the Sultan bin Ali Al Owais Cultural Award, issued special commemorative stamps honouring the 100th birth anniversary of Sultan bin Ali Al Owais, a renowned Emirati poet.
Born in the town of Al Hira in the Emirate of Sharjah in 1925, Sultan bin Ali Al Owais grew up in a family deeply rooted in literature and culture, which included several celebrated poets and researchers. He started writing poetry in 1947, and his first poem was published in 1970.
One of the pioneers of the UAE’s renaissance, he made significant contributions to the country’s economic, social and cultural realms. Bridging two generations of writers and poets, Al Owais is celebrated as a pioneer among Ghazal poets in the Arabian Gulf. During his lifetime, he received numerous awards and honours. Most notably, he was honoured by the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan in 1996, along with Their Highnesses Supreme Council Members and Rulers of the Emirates.
Besides his literary achievements, Sultan Al Owais has made significant contributions to the humanitarian, charitable, and cultural spheres in the UAE, the Arab world, and beyond. On December 17, 1987, Sultan bin Ali Al Owais established a permanent and independent award named after him to honour Arab writers and intellectuals. It is called the ‘Sultan bin Ali Al Owais Cultural Award’.
UNESCO has designated 2025 as the year to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the birth of poet Sultan bin Ali Al Owais. This celebration will highlight his literary works and humanitarian achievements, as well as his influence and support for the literary landscape in the UAE. It also recognises his contributions to promot.
