Description
Sharjah was named World Book Capital for the year 2019 by UNESCO as recognition of the
city’s continuous efforts in promoting books and literacy. Known as the City of Knowledge, it
has fast established itself as the source for the region’s growing publishing sector and has
become the hub for most book-related events and organisations in the UAE.
The nomination was also due to the city’s innovative, comprehensive and inclusive proposal
to the World Book Capital initiative. The yearlong program, which will start on 23 April 2019
alongside World Book and Copyright Day, focuses on the inclusivity of all members of the
community. It will include a series of cultural events as well as the launch of new initiatives
and projects that support the local and regional publishing industry, which will provide rich
and accessible content and books to all segments of society and promote a culture of
reading.
All events and initiatives created will run under one of the six guiding principles: Unifying
Communities, Fostering Knowledge, Honouring Heritage, Empowering Children and Youth,
Raising Awareness, and Developing Publishing Industry
