Description
Under the patronage and attendance of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai and Minister of Finance, Dubai International Marine Club is organizing the annual ‘Al Gaffal’ (the Return) race to mark the end of the water sports season. This race has been held every year since 1991.
The Al Gaffal or Sir Bu Na’air race represents an embodiment of the past and history, and revival of old memories. This race commemorates the festival which was celebrated by the forefather on their long journey after several months of pearl diving at sea.
The Al Gaffal race features nearly 100 dhows travelling to a distance of about 51 nautical miles. It requires big efforts from the organizing committee by way of keeping the area safe and protect the participants from dangers around them, especially from giant barges traversing the Gulf. The area takes place over a large area and the captain of each ship is free to choose his own route the finish line.
As part of efforts to commemorating and promoting awareness of this traditional water sports in the UAE, Emirates Post has issued a set of commemorative stamps in two denominations and a distinctive Souvenir Sheet.
