About the Award
In March 1998, H. H. Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai, the Minister of Industry & Finance in the UAE issued a decree forming (Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Award of Distinguished Academic Performance) in Dubai to support and promote the pedagogic and best practices in educational field. In 1999, H. H. decided to leverage the award to cover all the Emirates and enhance its value. In November 2000, Government Decree No. 25 was issued to establish Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Award of Distinguished Academic Performance, as an independent entity, authorised to use all available resources to achieve its goals.

In 2003, the award was extended to the GCC region in the following three categories: The Distinguished Student, Distinguished Teacher, and Distinguished School & School Administration. In 2006, H. H. announced The Best Practical Educational Award as a new category extended to cover all Arab countries.
