One of the oldest national organizations in the United Arab Emirates, the Automobile & Touring Club of the UAE (ATCUAE) marks its golden jubilee in 2015.
The club was founded in 1965. Initially established under the name of Automobile Club of Trucial States, it was first registered in Sharjah on December 12, 1965. On April 24, 1969, it was registered in Abu Dhabi.
As the national organization overseeing the development of motorsport, the club was chaired by high-profile personalities from early years. Sheikh Mohammad bin Salim Al Qassimi, the Founder, was the first to assume the position, and His Highness Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, UAE Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior also chaired the organization.
In 2006, His Highness Sheikh Mohammad bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice President and Prime Minister, and Ruler of Dubai, became the organization’s Honorary President, mirroring the position held by presidents and royal figures like Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II at the United Kingdom’s Royal Automobile Club (RAC), His Majesty King Mohamed VI at the Royal Automobile Club of Morocco (RACM), His Majesty King Juan Carlos I at the Real Automobile Club of Spain (RACE), His Majesty Albert II, King of Belgium, at the Royal Automobile Club of Belgium (RACB), His Majesty Sultan bin Qaboos at the Oman Automobile Association (OAA) and His Majesty King Abdullah II at the Royal Automobile Club of Jordan (RACJ).
Legendary rally driver Mohammed Ben Sulayem became ATCUAE President in 2005.
Since its inception, the club has played a leading role in the development of motorsport on national and international levels. Today, it governs approximately 140 competitive events on the UAE motorsport calendar, covering disciplines such as circuit racing, rallying, drag racing and motocross.
The ATCUAE is the country’s sole representative of the FIA, automobile sport’s world governing body, and its motorcycling and karting equivalents, the FIM and CIK. Its primary responsibilities are to promote the safe and sustainable growth of motorsport in the UAE, and to ensure all events are run professionally and according to regulations.
The organization is also a member of FIVA, the international body for classic vehicles, and the IRU, the International Road Transport Union. The ATCUAE is accredited by the UAE National Olympic Committee.
Emirates Post Group, as part of its efforts to document and highlight local and global achievements and important occasions, has issued a set of commemorative stamps on Automobile & Touring Club, as postage stamps are a channel of cross-cultural communication, reaching different countries and peoples across the globe.
