An Ongoing Success Story
In its push to contribute to diversifying the UAE’s oil-dependent economy, Tawazun Economic Council achieved a tremendous success across 11 various sectors, which resulted in fulfilling the main requirements for sustainable development; creating jobs and business opportunities, technology transfer and building of Emirati capabilities.
25 years ago, His Highness Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Abu Dhabi Crown Prince and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, came up with a unique concept to help diversify the emerging national economy.
The Offset Program Bureau, now Tawazun Economic Council, was soon created as a center of excellence in the development and fast-track execution of new and diverse commercial projects.
Major Highlights
During the past 25 years, Tawazun Economic Council facilitated creation of over 90 companies and joint ventures, at a total value of AED 36 billion, generating more than AED 70 billion in revenues.
The consolidated assets of these companies have grown exponentially to AED 542 billion, a clear indication of Tawazun Economic Council’s significant contribution to economic diversification drive in the UAE.
Key achievements:
- Driving privatization of water and electricity sector.
- First to list companies in Abu Dhabi Securities Exchange (ADX) and Dubai Financial Market (DFM).
- Enabling creation of more than 90 companies and investment vehicles, covering 11 sectors.
- Creating Mubadala, the investment arm of Abu Dhabi.
- Building a solid base for defense industries, spanning over 40 companies worth AED 29B.
Tawazun envisions maximizing economic benefits by providing the needed inputs for the industrial development, supervising relevant acquisition programs, driving necessary industry regulations and contribution to economic diversification.
Commemorating and promoting Tawazun Economic Council, Emirates Post Group has issued a distinctive set of commemorative stamps on silver jubilee of Tawazun Economic Council.
