Kingfish
7X has issued a special set of commemorative stamps featuring types of Kingfish native to UAE’s waters, to support the preservation of this valuable fish species. This issuance reaffirms 7X’s commitment to showcasing the UAE’s natural resources and preserving them for future generations.
Kingfish are a migratory species that travel through the Arabian Gulf waters during the winter season. They are surface-dwelling fish, typically found in small groups, known for thriving in warm waters and their free-swimming nature. They can swim at a speed of up to 70 kilometres per hour or even faster. When these fish are small, around the size of an arm or slightly larger, they are called ‘Khobat’ and when they grow larger than a meter, they are referred to as ‘Kanad’ or ‘Jannad’ with some reaching up to one and a half meters or more.
During the winter fishing season that lasts five to six months, fishermen catch these fish using nets known locally as ‘leigh’. At sunset, fishermen cast their nets into the sea, and at sunrise, they retrieve the nets, but catching Khobat fish can often be a challenging task.
Kingfish is an expensive and high-quality fish, with nutritious protein content. They also hold great economic and commercial significance across the globe, making them an important food source and a contributor to national income.
