Description

In celebration of the 52nd United Arab Emirates Union Day, Emirates Post Group in collaboration with Mohammed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI), created and issued three unique AI-generated postage stamps that represent the past, present, and future of the United Arab Emirates.
In a project led by MBZUAI, a blend of creative skill and technical expertise were employed to capture cultural history, Emirati landmarks such as Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque and Burj Khalifa, as well as sustainability, innovation, and national aspirations through watercolour-style artworks for postage stamps. The outcome was three designs that symbolize the UAE’s achievements of the past and present and its goals for a bright and successful future.
The task involved integrating real-world data such as historical elements, national clothing, and architectural styles to convey optimism and hope. A multimodal strategy, combining text-to-image algorithms, along with MBZUAI’s proprietary picture production pipeline, ensured the incorporation of variation and distinctiveness in designs.
An iterative refining approach in collaboration with Emirates Post Group allowed for precise adherence to postage stamp design criteria and cultural subtleties, showcasing a harmonious blend of design, substance, and cultural components. The project’s success is attributed to the dedicated work of MBZUAI’s Dr. Hao Li, associate professor of computer vision and director of the MBZUAI Metaverse Center, and his creative team, with contributions by Dr. Salman Khan, associate professor of computer vision, and Dr. Ahmed Dabbagh, director of professional services.
